Clothing Item Becomes a Bedside Pocket

So first off, does anyone know what this is??? Kinda short to be a dress… Really awkward worn over jeans as a shirt… A friend gave it to me. And it was given to her by her brother-in-law’s girlfriend. We couldn’t decide what this was. Sorry, Delia’s, better luck next time.

I decided to give this unidentified item of clothing new life as a bedside pocket. I had one in middle and high school, but somehow in so many moves, it got lost. It was actually really pretty though – cream fabric, a little eye lit pattern perhaps, a ruffle at the bottom, and my initials on it. So there are a lot of options on how to do this!

Since I already had the fabric, all this required was scissors, thread, and a sewing machine. And I’ll say, I’m not an expert sewer, but if you can sew a straight line, you’re good to go. To begin with, I cut a good long piece of fabric – about 2′ by 1′. (The ruffle that was already at the bottom is an added bonus. Wish I could tell you how to do it, but I’m not quite there yet on my sewing skills.) Then I sewed straights seams on the top and sides.

From the extra fabric laying around, I cut a pocket. You can make this smaller or even do a double pocket – one small one on top of this big one – if you are feeling ambitious. The big pocket should be a little wider than the back piece of fabric’s width, in order for you to make a clean seam when you sew it.

Then you sew the pocket down – just the bottom and sides, of course. I found it easiest to sew the bottom first and then the two sides.

And lastly, I sewed a line in the middle of the pocket to create two pockets. Make sure one is big enough for a book though! The smaller one can be for glasses, a water bottle, eye mask, etc.

Here’s the final product in use:

Just tuck it between the mattress and box springs. Very handy to have a pocket there! Much less clutter on the night stand! Or better yet, who needs a night stand when you can have a bedside pocket?
