Making Crayons

I babysit three adorable kids once every week. We have a ton of fun together. This summer I thought it would be fun to make jumbo crayons from broken crayons that they had laying around.

Supplies:
Broken crayons, out of the wrapper
Muffin tin, or a fun cookie tin, as shown …all I had was a Valentine’s tin. Valentine’s in July was fun! But this tin is perfect for now! One of those flexible silicone muffin pans might be easier.
Pam
Oven or a hot summer day
Wax paper

First, spray the muffin/cookie tin with pam. Then we sorted out all of their broken crayons and put them in the Valentine’s Day cookie tin I brought over.

Then, I had planned to leave the tin out in the sun for the crayons to melt together, but since we didn’t have a ton of time, I heated the oven to 350 and put the tray in for maybe 5 minutes. Anyone who has ever left crayons in the car knows they melt fast! Take them out and let them cool for at least 45 minutes. They will appear cool sooner, but until they are finished, they’ll be difficult to get out of the tin without breaking. Trust me. Learned this the hard way.

Finally, remove them from the tin. (You may need a knife to pry its edges, giving it a head start.) Place them on wax paper to finish solidifying. Look how cute! Now you’re ready to color with your tie-dye crayon!

I love them! I made similar crayons for my son’s Christmas gifts for his school buddies, and they were such a hit. Great tutorial!

    Your wreath is precious, too!

I love them too! With 4 kids — you would never believe all the broken crayons we have in the house!! I think I might try this 2 ways though…It would be really neat to ask all the kids in my kid’s class to send in their broken crayons and put all the pink together — all the red together — all the blue — you get the idea — then when they need to borrow one — it’s way to big and cute to just throw into their box!!

My kids would so love the tie dye crayons though!!

Thanks for the great idea and tutorial!

Fantastic use of that pan! I have the Halloween pan like that, I’ll have to keep that in mind for Trick or Treats next year!
