My sweet baby sister (yes, I have a baby sister) turned one this past August. And since she is finally sprouting some hair, I decided to make her a cute bow holder! After all, first birthday gifts are really for the parents, right?
Before I begin, pardon the random directions the pictures are facing. Sometimes my eye, my camera, and my computer don’t agree.
My inspiration was this ballerina ribbon board that my friend’s sister, Nicole, made:
My supplies:
- Half of a piece of foam board (Hobby Lobby will cut it for you for 50 cents.)
- Marker
- Exacto knife
- Spray adhesive
- One yard of pink fabric
- Three to four yards of pink tulle
- Scissors
- Two different shades of thick pink ribbon
- Tacks (though a staple gun would work better if you have it)
- Hot glue gun (for extra reinforcement). This may not be needed if you have a staple gun.
I drew the form of a torso on the foam board.
I, then, cut the torso out with an exacto knife.
Placing the torso on the fabric, I cut a square of fabric around the torso, making sure there was a couple of inches on each side in order for the fabric to fully cover the foam board.
Using spray adhesive, I glued the fabric to the front of the foam board.
I hope this isn’t confusing, but if you are reading this as you go, you’ll understand. The fabric doesn’t like to fold smoothly over the curves. So you need to cut lines to the curve. Then you will be able to tuck the fabric under.
Eventually it will look like this, and since the back is messy looking, I actually traced the torso and glued this layer of fabric on the back to cover up any messiness. (Refer to the next step for a picture of the back.) It just makes it more presentable though if you are making this as a gift.
Then begin applying the tulle – on the back side. (Here you can see what the back looks like.) I would have used a staple gun, but since I didn’t have one, I improvised with thumb tacks. Also keep in mind that your tool skirt will look fuller than this. I actually did not buy enough fabric at first, so I had to go back and fill it in later.
After applying the tulle, flip the board over and begin applying the ribbon to the front. This is where the bows will actually hang. I actually applied 5. Nicole did 6 though. Your choice.
To cover up all of my tacks and the bunches of tulle, I hot glued three layers of ribbon around the torso.
Then I added a bow the the side hip. And I hot glued two piece of ribbon to the backs of the shoulders and tied them in a bow, to use to hang.
The final product:
I think this may be the cutest thing I have ever made. I had a lot of trouble parting with it. My mom sent me a picture recently of the bow holder hung up in my sister’s bathroom. My baby sister was standing in front of it crying. I guess she didn’t appreciate it quite as much as my mom!
