Always? Without Ceasing? In Everything? …Really?

This verse seems to be a theme this week.

Ever know one of those people who truly rejoices always? Who prays without ceasing? And gives thanks in everything? I’m privileged to live life with one of those people. She’s my bestie. She finds joy in every situation and truly overflows with thankfulness to the Lord despite what life throws at her, and recently it’s been a lot. Actually our entire friendship (8 years now) it’s been a lot. Still, I am constantly encouraged to pursue the Lord more because of the way my dear friend lives her life.

I talked to another sweet friend recently who is trying to get pregnant and discouraged by those around her who seem to get pregnant the first night they try. {Who are those people anyway? Certainly not us!} After listening to this friend pour her heart out, I felt God tugging at my heart to share with her something God has just recently taught me. And is teaching me. I shared with her that I’ve realized that it’s through trials that God sharpens us. And the more we resist this trials and wallow in self-pity, the less He can do. What I mean by that is that it’s up to us how much we grow during hard times. I’ve heard God called the “Redeemer of circumstances” – but if we don’t turn to Him, we may never see that redemption in our lives. If we don’t allow God to sharpen us, how can we ever expect to grow closer to Him? And how do we let him sharpen us? What I’m learning is to lean into God. Whether it’s in prosperity or hardships. Obey the words of this verse – “rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks.” And why? Because “this is God’s will for you.”

In the spring of 2010, I learned to respond to God and to listen to His voice in a way I never would have prior to my brother’s death. I am sure that many women who have struggled with infertility {That’s just what comes to mind.} can relate to this and say that they know God in a way that others don’t, and even in a way they never could have known Him otherwise had they not faced such a trial. Likewise, I know my sweet friend and her husband would say that their faith is even sweeter now in the midst of her sickness because they truly need Him.

Instead of resisting trials, embrace them. I know that sounds crazy. But the truth is this: God is good, and He is sovereign. For any of you in the midst of trials, I pray that though the trial is bitter, your faith that will come out will be oh-so-sweet.

  1. Thank you for sharing. I had a very hard childhood, things that I don’t discuss they are so bad. But I am fine with that. It made me the person I am and I praise God that I am who I am. He did not do those things to me. He helps me cope and grow and He was with me to protect me when I needed it.

BTW I went to a therapist years ago and we discussed how much I pray. He said that I prayed obsessively and it was part of my OCD disorder. I thought it was hilarious that someone thought you could pray too much. That was my last session with him.

  4. Awesome reminder, Ashleigh! Thanks for sharing your heart about this. Such important words of truth that we need to remember. It always amazes me to hear the stories of what God uses to draw people closer to Him. So many blessings come out of dark times–only God could do that…He is so good! Blessings, friend!
