We made homemade play dough! It was on one of my pregnant sick days. I figured Lilleigh was tired of watching Lady and the Tramp and Dora. We do have some play dough at home, but only a couple of small containers. They’ve sorta lost their novelty. Making our own allowed me to make my own colors (don’t judge them though – first try), make a large amount, and actually feel like I was doing something other than lay on the couch.
I have to credit my friend Nicole with this recipe. It was easy and made completely with items from around the house.
Homemade play dough
- 1 c. flour
- 2 heaping tsp cream of tartar
- 1 T vegetable oil or some sort of neutral oil (I used sunflower because I don’t keep vegetable oil around.)
- 2 tsp scented extract (optional)
- 1/2 c. kosher salt (or 1/3 c. regular salt)
- Food coloring
Mix all ingredients in a bowl. Then add 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until combined. Then turn the mixture out onto a floured surface and knead until smooth. If it’s still sticky, add extra flour. Technically, you can add food coloring at the boiling stage or at the kneading. (I added it at the kneading phase though, and it seemed streaky and uneven. Next time I’ll do boiling.) Store in an airtight container.
How have you been entertaining little ones this winter?
