Last year I heard over and over again how helpful it was to see our grocery spending for the month. So as promised, this year I saved up our February receipts yet again to show y’all exactly what I bought this month and how much we paid for it all. Though our budget has increased to $340, up from $280, I managed to stay under $300 for this month. (If you’re wondering why I increased our budget, wait till the end.)
And keep in mind please, that I am pregnant, and I was in the midst of hunger-induced pregnancy nausea, which meant I was eating way more than usual!

Additionally I added $10 to our fermented cod liver oil. Our co-op was supposed to order in January, so I had $90 from January set aside for that (3 bottles @ $30 each). But due to a product shortage, we were unable to place the order until February. By that point so many people had ordered that the cost had dropped again to $25 per bottle. So instead of taking an extra $15 to spend on other groceries, we took $10 from February’s budget to add to that money to get a 4th bottle. Pregnant women need more FCLO!
For milk, we spent $72. We buy 3 gallons/ week @ $6/ gallon for raw milk.
Hubs chose to use some of his own money to buy stuff for his latest love – green smoothies.
This brings my total to $294.97 for the month. I intentionally stayed under of $340 budget because I wanted to set aside money for our large meat purchase in March. (We bought just under $90 worth of local grassfed ground beef, Italian sausage, and breakfast sausage this past weekend.) Also many of our usual health supplements were bought in January and March, leaving us that wiggle room to save more in February for meat.
Wondering why we increased our grocery spending? First of all, when we set $280 as our budget years ago, the healthcare laws still allowed us to buy any OTC meds on our HSA tax-free. (Think prenatals, homeopathic meds, elderberry, etc) And while $280 was totally doable for us last year, we have since started increasing our intake of supplements and raw milk. We see this as an investment in our health and a savings on healthcare expenses down the road. I know not everyone can do this. We all do the best we can! And I also know that even with $60 dedicated towards these extras each month, we are still crunched much of the time to make this grocery budget work. I know many friends with higher grocery budgets, dedicated towards buying more organic and more grass-fed. Hey, if you have the money and are using it to buy better foods, power to ya!
